While growing up I struggled immensely (and still do at times) with body image, body dysmorphia and disordered eating and my drug of choice was bulimia nervosa. I spent two years of my life struggling with this disease, while doing everything in my power to keep it hidden. It became this crutch of mine that evolved from a superficial look oriented wish for weight loss to an emotional release. When things were chaotic in my life, which they were most of the time, my bulimia would get out of control and anything would set me off into a binging and purging rampage and I felt as if there was nothing I could do to stop it. There were times when a simple apple was all it took to ruin my day and suddenly everything around me became a numbers game. Numbers existed in everything; how many calories I ate that day to the number on the scale and I was sucked into this world of bathroom trips and an overwhelming sense of not being good enough.

Eating disorders will take over your life and every waking moment revolves around the disease and I am so grateful to be in a better place now. I am not in any way a 100% better because having been affected by such a disease it will live with you every day and every day becomes a work in progress. I have been blessed with a renewed vision and perspective that has given me the amazing chance to start over again and look at life through a new and positive lens. I do struggle at times because I wish to lose weight but through this new look at life I have found that there is no need for numbers or scales but to judge how I feel  through my health and not through looks. I no longer want to lose weight to look better but to FEEL BETTER.

To get the point and my love of probiotics, one of the affects of having disordered eating is a slowed down and all around messed up digestive system. When I started to eat real food again and basically get back to eating a normal balanced diet my stomach went crazy and every time I ate I ended up with these horrible stomach pains. It got so bad that I barely wanted to eat at all and I was living on just one meal a day because I didn’t want to deal with those pains and issues more than once a day, if at all. I struggled to find an answer to these issues and I spent countless days googling digestive disorders and ways to alleviate these symptoms and the best answer for me was probiotics.

I was beyond excited when my Vegan Cuts Snack box arrived!

I’ve been dying to try it ever since they came out so when I found out they had chosen me to review the May box I jumped right on it! For those who don’t know what it is, Vegan Cuts provides monthly snack boxes for $19.95 (free shipping within the US!) a month and each month you’ll get tons of goodies delivered straight to your door! It”s a great way to discover new vegan items as well as get enough snacks to last you a month if you don’t end up eating them all at once!

vegan cuts

The items that came in the snack box were:

I loved the Vigilant Eats oatmeal because it’s a quick, easy and healthy treat I could take on the go and I love the addition of powdered hemp milk. I have to say I am in no way a fan of the Journey Bar. The idea behind the bar is awesome, a savory nutrition bar but I think the formula needs to be worked on. When I tasted the bar, there was an overwhelming ginger taste that I just could not imagine eating more of. The Earnest Eats bar was a little chalky but had good flavor. The Graw Bar was DELICIOUS! I loved it so much haha. I need to buy tons more of make my own version and I love that there are nothing but simple. natural and healthy ingredients. The Ginny Bakes bar is … say the least…..terrible. I honestly checked the date to see if it was expired because it was hard as a rock and tasted stale as can be! I feel bad saying this about it but I have to be honest and it was gross. The Bare Fruit apple chips were super yummy and I adore that there isn’t any added sugar as there shouldn’t be to begin with!

Saffron Road Crunchy Chickpeas = my new favorite snack!

I feel IN LOVE with the chickpeas and I questioned why I hadn’t found them sooner! So yummy and they taste just like litte bit sized falafel goodness! 😀 Onto the rest of the stuff, the Teecino herbal coffee was such a new thing for me and I had no idea what to expect and it actually wasn’t bad at all. I think what I decide to put in it can be changed but overall the taste was sweet, buttery and hazelnut-ty and a great coffee alternative! I could live with having me a cup of Teecino  every morning once I figure out the right proportions!

My boyfriend unfortunately goobled up all of Angie’s Sweet & Salty Kettle Corn so I can’t say much on that but I’m sure it was delicious! I haven’t yet tried the Crystal Deodorant Body Towelettes yet but I’ve heard good things about the brand so I’m looking forward to trying it!

We all know what superfoods are and what they can do for ue so I decided to create a superfood  PACKED cookie which is almost gluten free! To make it gluten free simply sub the flour with an all purpose gluten free flour and you’re on your way! These cookies pack a superfood punch of golden berries, chia and flax seeds, yumberry powder, goji berry powder, cacao nibs and mulberries!

This is just one of those cookies you won’t feel guilty eating!

Chia Seeds are known for being rich in Omega-3 fatty acids as well iron, magnesium, fiber, calcium, zinc and antioxidants! Also, they make a great binder and egg replacer similar to flax seeds. Golden Berries are an Incan berry that contain vital nutrients like beta carotene, protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, iron, fiber and others! Cacao is super high in antioxidants and magnesium! Goji Berries have been gaining popularity for years now and with good reason they contain 18 amino acids and more than 20 trace minerals as well as Vitamin A, C and E.  Mulberries are rich in Vitamin C, iron, calcium and fiber! Yumberries are packed with antioxidants and rich in Vitamin C! In China, they’re known as yang mei fruit and have been hailed to aid digestion, fight inflammation and lower bad cholesterol! Let’s not forget the benefits of Flax Seeds which are high in Omega-3 and 6 fatty acids.

The cookies themselves are slightly crunchy from the combination of the cacao nibs and the berries but also chewy and sweet. You would think they would taste like oatmeal cookies but they have a fruity flavor from the berry powders. Definitely worth a try! Make sure to read more for the recipe and a review of New York Natural’s Kale Chips and Greenola plus a special offer!

Have you tried Kale Chips yet?!

vegan heart attack burger

The Vegan Heart Attack Burger from Foodswings in Brooklyn, NY.

I finally got to visit Foodswings  (a vegan joint hailed for epic fast food and home to purveyors of midnight munchies and a cure for morning hangovers!) and it definitely lives up to its name. I spent way too long trying to figure out what to get because I sat there and I’m like “this is the first time I’m eating at a vegan place and I’m going to get a burger?!” As a vegan or a vegetarian, you know how it is at every restaurant it’s the same thing all the time, veggie burger after endless veggie burger! Haha. Even with that in mind I decided to get the vegan heart attack because well when in Rome! It reminded me so much of something a meat eater would eat so I decided to try it plus my boyfriend (who is a meat eater) thought it sounded the best and probably thinks it’s funny to watch me eat something so reminiscent of regular burger.

The Vegan Heart Attack is a seitan burger topped with soy cheese, soy bacon, pickles, mayo, tomatoes, lettuce and onion served with a pickle and coleslaw and it is a monster! I want to like it SO MUCH and while I’m sure any other vegan would, I’m just not into the soy everything thing plus the burger was a bit on the mushy side and fell apart completely as I was eating it. It’s a great one or two time indulgence when you’re in the mood for a quick lunch or dinner but not something I could consciously eat all the time but hey it is meant to be fast food!

metal fries

The Metal Fries on the other hand were soooooo good! I could eat them forever and I may sound hypocritical because there’s soy cheese on them but ugh they were so good. I’ve watched people eating cheese fries for so long in front of me that I just had to try them! The metal fries are topped with a cheese sauce, buffalo sauce and bleu cheese dressing and my boyfriend just about demolished them in seconds. If you’re planning on heading over there anytime soon definitely try the metal fries!

butterfinger shake

Out of everything at Foodswings my absolute favorite buy was the Butterfinger Milkshake! Gah, I want another one just thinking about it! The first sip I took was rich, smooth, chocolaty goodness that is so reminiscent of dairy that I was slightly worried whether there was some in there! If there’s any reason to check out Foodswings it’s their milkshakes, they are to die for! I definitely plan on taking a trip back there to try another flavor or maybe rather…….every flavor!  Marry me, Butterfinger Milkshake!

If you’ve been searching for a mecca of some serious vegan fast food grub bordering on the flip side of a carnivore’s heaven check out Foodswings because they’re delivering just that! Check out their website here!

See you soon, Foodswings! (I’ll definitely be back.)

dunwell doughnuts

Vegan Chocolate Coconut Explosion and Cherry Pie Doughnut from Dun-Well Doughnuts in Brooklyn, NY.

After checking out the Vegan Shop-Up, I decided to stop by Dun-Well Doughnuts (an all vegan shop that has not only doughnuts but ice cream and coffee as well!) because I’ve heard so many great things about them. First and foremost the decor is amazing! It has an industrial, old time feel to it which is even better with the quirky beat music accompanying it. They have all these cool gadgets all over the walls and the shelves from huge acorns to vintages whisks and chocolate board signs displaying different styles of typography. It’s an eclectic mix of new and old and I love the old jukebox near the counter!

They had tons of different flavors like margarita, peanut butter and jelly, pink lemonade and so on but we decided to try out the cherry pie and chocolate coconut explosion! The cherry pie is a basic chocolate covered doughnut with a cherry pie filling center that was delectable but didn’t really scream cherry pie to me. While the doughnut was delicious and I would buy it again, I wouldn’t call it a cherry pie doughnut. The chocolate coconut explosion on the other hand was just that, a chocolate coconut indulgence to epic proportions! I would buy it again and again and again! Ugh, just thinking about it makes me want it again!

That’s pure unadulterated love right there guys! haha (can’t believe I’m posting that btw!)

All in all, Dun-Well Doughnuts is definitely worth a trip if you live in NYC or are just visiting, you have to check them out! I cant wait to go again so I can try their other flavors including their ice cream! Not going to lie, their Doughnut Sundae sounds ridiculous but it must be delicious!
